Text Box: Pastor’s Thoughts

The song writer asks the question, “How can I say thanks for the things you have done for me?” My thought, how would God answer that question? After all we are addressing our Heavenly Father in the song, yet like with many other issues in religion, we ask the question and then come up with our own answers. Father, how can I say thanks? I know God has the ability to discern my heart, my thoughts, and I realize that He knows me better than I know myself.
Father what will allow my appreciation of the things you have done for me to be an expression of sincere and guanine thanksgiving? Maybe I should consider how my child says thanks in determining how you might answer my question. “Dad, thanks for letting me borrow the car.” That sounds good on the surface, but how thankful is dad when the car is returned filthy and the tank empty. That opens up a deep school. God has done far more for me than handing me a set of keys.
Let me try this, I’ll express my thanks to God in the same fashion in which I thank the waitress at the Bob Evans. I’ll give Him a 10% tip and then walk away complaining about the meal and the price I had to pay to eat there. Nope, I don’t think that will work because he rides home with me in the car hearing every word I say after the fact.
Maybe I should consider how a small innocent child says thanks. They have no ulterior motives when they say thanks. They come with a smile on their face and arms spread as if to say their heart is accessible to both express and receive love. Wow, I might me on to something. I believe that thought is worth spending some time pondering.
Maybe you can help me explore the question at hand. If so I’ll be glad to hear your thoughts on the matter.
