Pastor’s Thoughts

I have taken on a number of projects at church throughout my life. I’ve painted, remodeled, done siding, replaced roofs, built additions, installed tile, poured cement floors, mowed grass and laid block just to mention a few things. I have worked with sound systems, computer networks and installed equipment for projection ministry. Many of those tasks did not require exact or precise work but some did. For example, when painting a wall you do not have to cover it with the exact same amount per square inch. When it comes to painting close, within reason is good enough. Now the same isn’t true when putting shingles on a roof. Leave one small gap or nail exposed to the weather and you are going to have a serious problem. When you cut grass and miss a blade or two no one is really going to notice, but lay one tile in the wrong direction and it will stick out like a sore thumb. If one cinderblock happens to be a tad off it doesn’t mean the wall will not stand, but misconnect one small wire in a projection project and the whole system shuts down. The point is some things require exactness or preciseness.

I find that same reasoning applies to our walk with God. Some things in our spiritual lives only require a passive or relaxed attitude. How loud or softly we sing, attending or not attending church related social events, or raising our hands in worship or just sitting there reverently are some of those things that are more pliable. Then again there are those things where details and precision are vital. The Bible speaks of THE TRUTH not just a truth. The Truth is not a broad variety of thoughts in which we can pick at random and then agree that we have similar beliefs. God’s Truth is unique, it is precise and in tune with God’s very nature. Our ability to know and abide in God’s will and favor are dependent on the fine tread of decrement of the truth. How can we obey what we do not comprehend? How can we honor what we refuse to take time to appreciate? Our relationship with the truth is what allows our connection with God to work properly.

God has gone to great length to provide us with this all important link to Himself. He inspired writers to pin the words of our Bible, He preserved those truths throughout the ages that all men would have access to His Holy scriptures. He even promised though heaven and earth pass away, His word would abide forever. God is immutable or unchanging; therefore who He was is who He still is. God preserved and recorded historical events to reveal his relationship with men that we may know of His expectations and desires to relate to us. For example He has always condemned sin while extending grace to sinners who sincerely repent. The Truth however is not like the produce section at the grocery store where you go in and select what you like and leave behind those fruits and vegetables that you don’t care for. All of God’s truth is relevant and important when it comes to our relationship with Christ. Our effectiveness, influence, worship, service, attitudes, conduct, and spirit are directly influenced by the truth or the lack thereof.

So when it comes to our relationship with God, it shouldn’t be viewed as painting a wall which requires little training or precision, but a complicated and vital responsibility that requires understanding, effort, and knowledge. God has provided the instruction that can and will allow you to complete your walk hearing those precious words, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” You find those instructions, “THE TRUTH” in your Bible, God’s Holy Word!
