Pastor’s Thoughts
I’ve always enjoyed hearing the song, “Getting Used to the Family of God” by Bill and Gloria Gaither. The thought of getting used to anything new implies one must make some adjustments. For example when you drive a car you have never driven before you might have to adjust the seat, the mirrors, and look over the instrument panel. It takes time to discover the blind spots and one must become accustomed to the feel of the breaks and acceleration characteristics of that particular vehicle. However with a little time and adjustment you feel right at home.
The same is true when entering the Family of God or even having to move to a new congregation. From day one we begin to make adjustments. At first, things may feel a little stressed, new relationship are being established, discoveries of personal interest and awkward moments are to be expected. We find some of our new relationships and bonding come quickly, while others seem difficult to establish. The fact is, everyone in God’s church is different and yet we share a common bond, a personal experience with the Lord Jesus Christ.
That is the relationship that sets the Church of God apart from any human organization. The Church is not an organization; it is the living, growing, thinking, breathing, body of Jesus Christ. Each member of the Church of God has experienced a spiritual birth, establishing them as members of God’s family. We are bound together with family ties to God our Father and His Word guides each child in a similar fashion.
Holding all those things in common, each Christian remains unique. We are called upon in scripture to respond to each and every one of God’s kids with a loving, caring, patient, and faith based relationship. However it may take some time for those characteristics to be recognized. Some obstacles such as prejudice, shy natures, fear, or personality quirks may need some adjustments so that they can be overcome. However with time and the help of the Holy Spirit believers soon feel right at home with God’s wonderful people.
I love “Getting Used to the Family of God” and I don’t mean just the song!
In His love and service,
Pastor Danny
